Assignment #1 - The blind spot

Your answer should be typewritten and stated in complete English prose. You will be graded as much on writing style, clarity, and correct use of grammar as on content. State the methods used to obtain your results, equations, and other relevant details. Your answer should be around 1-2 pages in length, but do not be overly verbose.
In this assignment, you will measure the size of your blind spot. All you will need for this is a pen and paper.
a) First, make sure you can find your blind spot. Verify that it is in the nasal retina of each eye. You will find the demonstration on page 71 of the text useful in getting you started.
b) Now, measure where your blind spot is located (in terms of eccentricity). To do this, you will need to measure how far away you are holding the page. Then you will have to combine this number with the distance between the fixation mark and the dot on the page, using either the trigonometric method ( function) or the approximate method described in the handout. Report your answer in degrees of eccentricity and make a diagram illustrating how you figured it out.
c) Next measure the approximate size of your blindspot. There are many different ways of doing this - you need to get creative. (Hint: you will notice that if you make the dot very small, there is a range over which you can move the page back and forth. Think about what is going on here). Again, report your answer in degrees, and make a diagram showing how you got your answer.
Bonus question: Is the blind spot unavoidable? If not, how could it possibly be avoided, and what do you suppose are the pros and cons to this solution in comparison to the one we have?
